Trade Mission to Norway and/or Iceland

    Norway: October 18 - 22            Iceland: October 25 - 28

    Mission Organizers:

    Sponsors.jpg

The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Nova Scotia Business Inc. (NSBI) are organizing a multi-sector trade mission to Norway and Iceland. Companies have the option to participate in one or both of the markets.

The first part of the trade mission will take place in Norway from October 18 to 22 with the option to continue on to Iceland from October 25 to 28.

Nova Scotia companies have had success in both of these markets. Last year, ACOA and NSBI led its first trade mission to Norway and discovered that there are many business opportunities in the market. This mission is an excellent opportunity for companies to follow-up from last Spring's mission, and for new companies to explore the market.

Over the years, Nova Scotia companies have continually had success in Iceland. Although Iceland’s economy experienced some challenges over the past couple of years, things are improving steadily and the country has continued to see growth in the last two quarters of this year. It is important that our province's companies continue to build on existing relationships and seek business opportunities in the Icelandic market.

The advantages for doing business in Norway and Iceland are very similar. The benefits include:

    • Decreased tariffs: As a result of the Canada-Bilateral Trade agreement with EFTA countries;
    • Similar key industries including natural resources, oil & natural gas, and fisheries; and
    • Favourable transportation routes.

As a trade mission participant, companies will be provided with:

    • Business matchmaking services: An in-market expert will set up meetings tailored to your company's specific goals and objectives with businesses.
    • In-market ground transportation
    • Networking receptions

Companies have the option to participate in one or both of the markets for a set fee of $1,000. Participants are responsible for the cost of round trip airfare, accommodation and meals.

To register, fill out the Norway and/or Iceland) and return it to Jennifer Dunbar at jdunbar@nsbi.ca

    Special Offer:
Participants of the trade mission to Norway and/or Iceland are eligible to receive the services of the ACOA Export Mentoring program (up to $5,000 value) as part of their registration fee.

The Export Mentoring program provides participants with up to 40 hours of export mentoring consulting services.  Participants will be matched with a consultant best suited to meet their needs.

    Date: Norway: October 18 - 22; Iceland: October 25 - 28
    Location: Norway & Iceland

Cost: $1,000 (Cheque payable to Nova Scotia Business Inc. or credit card online)

How do we shape work and talent in Atlantic Canada for the coming challenges?

A discussion among knowledge workers, employers, governments and educators

    Saint Mary’s University

    7:30 to 10:30 am, October 29, 2010

    T

he old industrial economy focused on attracting employers to our region.  But a post industrial “knowledge economy” is presenting new challenges. The focus has shifted from firms to individual workers.  Now we must concentrate on their opportunities - their training, their skills, their drive and initiative.  But we must also address the obstacles and pitfalls they face – precarious employment, self-employment, access to capital, building networks and maintaining control of their intellectual property.

These challenges affect all stakeholders – workers and their organizations, employers and their organizations, governments and educators.  This workshop will be a chance to hear from some major thinkers on these issues and to discuss the issues with others in the knowledge economy.

    •      Katherine V. Stone: Professor of Law, University of California Los Angeles, author of From Widgets to Digits: Employment Regulation for the Changing Workplace and the forthcoming Globalization and Flexibilization: The Remaking of the Employment Relationship in the 21st Century.  How Do We Regulate Work in the Knowledge Economy?”
    •        Peter Bruce: Deputy Chief Information Officer, Government of Canada.  “What Should Governments Do For Knowledge Workers?”
    •        Eamon Hoey: Over 30 years of experience consulting to the telecommunications industry on strategic, marketing and regulatory issues.  “Are We Ready for Knowledge Workers?”
    •        Peter Murdoch: Vice-President, Media, with the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union “Do Self-Employed Knowledge Workers Need and Want a Collective Voice?”

9:30 am – “World Café”-style roundtables (small group discussions) on topics like:

    Public Policy & Law

    Representation

What kind of law, regulation and government policies are best for the knowledge economy? Where and how should governments be investing public funds to build this economy?

What types of associations do knowledge workers belong to and how do they express their interests?

    Working conditions and careers

    Managing knowledge workers

How are careers defined and managed when work is intangible, creative, remote, project-based, or focused on end products rather than long-term relationships?  How shall we deal with the precariousness of such work?

How do you manage semi-autonomous professionals collaborating with peers, owners, and managers?  Where are managers’ sources of power and legitimacy?

    Intellectual property

Training and issues of knowledge management

Who owns the intellectual property of knowledge workers?  How will the parties negotiate these issues?

In networked employment, whose responsibility is training and development?  Where does investment in human capital fit with worker autonomy, global citizenship, and product value?

The Atlantic Provinces Economic Council (APEC) presents

    Outlook 2011

    Atlantic Canada's 16th Annual
    Business Outlook Conference

APEC's Business Outlook Conference provides essential economic intelligence to guide your strategic plans and an opportunity to join in the discussion of Atlantic Canada's most important business issues.

    This year's conference theme:
    Atlantic Canada's Common Energy Future

The energy sector represents a key source of potential investment and future growth throughout the Atlantic region. All four provinces are striving to produce or access cleaner energy and improve their economic competitiveness. Electric utilities are beginning to explore the opportunities to work together but recent events have highlighted tensions both within the Atlantic region and with neighbouring Quebec.

This year's Outlook Conference will focus on the opportunities to develop stronger regional linkages as we explore these key questions:
    · What will be the most important sources of energy production in the Atlantic provinces over the next decade and how will they strengthen the region's economy?

    · What role will new technology and measures to improve energy efficiency have on energy demand and the viability of new energy sources?

    · How will the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico affect local exploration activity and the risk assessment of energy projects in general?
