    Banff Venture Forum

The 2010 Banff Venture Forum (Sept 23&24) marks the 12th anniversary of Canada’s premier equity financing event for hi-tech companies. At the forum you can expect a premium networking environment that showcases the hottest hi-tech companies from across North America, discusses key industry issues, and provides opportunities to learn from world-class business professionals.

The ICT Council has 5 conference passes available to Alberta-based ICT companies - each pass represents a $1,200 value! Interested individuals can apply online or send an email to ExecDirector@AlbertaICT.ca. The application process is simple and chances are good that you will get a pass! This event is sure to sell out this year. Deadline for applications is Sept 13, 2010.

    CleanTech Conference

ABCTech is hosting a CleanTech conference in Red Deer and Lacombe on Sept 17th and 18th. The two day event is a gathering of Alberta's clean-tech change agents: entrepreneurs and new enterprises, investors and policy influencers from the many sectors comprising Alberta's fast growing clean-tech industry. The council has two passes (a $200 value) available for the conference. Interested? Contact me ASAP at ExecDirector@AlbertaICT.ca.

    From the Executive Director

In June, the ICT Council submitted a set of recommendations to Industry Canada’s as part of its consultation process to develop its Digital Economy Strategy. The ICT Council is working to ensure its activities are aligned with Industry Canada and other provincial initiatives through participation in several pan-provincial initiatives involving CDMN, ITAC, the ICT Federation, and other provincial associations. While progress over the last 8 months has been predominantly planning, joint opportunities are being pursued in the areas technology commercialization and communications. We plan to expand our resources through these national initiatives.

During the consultation process we identified that strengthening Canada’s digital economy involves initiatives that address the needs of manufacturers, distributors, and consumers of ICT-based products. Our recommendations to Industry Canada are available online at www.AlbertaICT.ca/Forum).

So “Where’s the Beef”; I mean, “What does all this mean to you as an ICT company?” The council is actively working to raise the profile of Alberta’s ICT sector and the companies within the sector. Additionally, we continue to sponsor business and professional development events through our partner organizations. Upcoming events sponsored by the ICT Council include: an organized trade mission to China (next week), the CleanTech Symposium (Sept 17&18), the Banff Venture Forum (Sept 23&24), and the CIPS ICT Conference (Nov 1-3). In addition to these signature events, WITEC, the DSA, Digital Alberta, CCAT, and AGG are all planning breakfast, lunch, and evening events throughout the fall.

The ICT Council participated in TECNA 2010. This conference involved industry associations from various parts of Canada and the United States. Contacts made at the conference may be valuable coaches for Alberta companies interested in entering US markets.

The council has initiated a market awareness campaign designed to generate awareness of Alberta’s vibrant ICT sector. To support a number of planned articles and press releases, the council needs your participation. We are collecting company brochures and corporate logos for a sector profile document that can be displayed online or at trade events. Collecting materials for every company is impossible, so I’m working on a “low hanging fruit” basis – by collecting available materials: company logos and pdf brochures (restricted to one or two 8.5” x 11” pages). Want some free promotion? Get your materials to me through our website www.AlbertaICT.ca/LogoCollection.

    Media Campaign

Further to our announcement in June to sponsor a series of media articles on Alberta’s ICT sector, the Alberta ICT Council is about to release the first 4 articles in the series. We are still accepting companies interested in participating in this promotional program. For $1,000, your company will be profiled in one of the articles and referenced in a second article. This is an excellent opportunity to build national awareness for your company and its products. Troy Media will write the articles and distribute them through their media channels – reaching approximately 8,000 journalists in North America and Europe. At the end of the program, the articles will be combined to create a brochure that will be used by the ICT Council and other groups as collateral when promoting Alberta’s ICT Sector. Participating companies will also have access materials for their own use. The cost for SMB companies to participate in the program has been subsidized through the council’s program funding. At $1,000, this is a great value.

HALIFAX, NS, Canada – June 21, 2010 - Export Nova Scotia Inc. (ExportNS), which provides sustainable transformation solutions to Caribbean governments, announced that it is continuing its pursuit of transformation opportunities in the Caribbean via a Latin American event.

As a follow-on to ExportNS's successful attendance at the recent 'Building a New Haiti' conference, held just north of Port-au-Prince, it will continue building its Caribbean relationships and advancing opportunities to assist Caribbean nations by attending the "Business Future of the Americas (BFA)" conference in Lima this week. ExportNS will be represented by its President, David Gough, at the BFA event hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce of Peru.

The BFA conference, see http://www.perumeetingaaccla2010.com/en/index.php, will bring together high-level business delegations and government officials of more than 23 countries in the Western Hemisphere (Latin America, the Caribbean, Canada, and the United States). This year marks the 14th BFA conference and it will present an exceptional opportunity to discuss the key challenges facing the Americas.

"The Haiti conference identified specific Haitian and Caribbean opportunities that can be satisfied by ExportNS with its public and private sector partners, to provide immediate benefits to the respective nations," says Gough. "Our intention in Lima is to continue to identify similar transformation opportunities, to expand our partner network and to further develop our Caribbean relationships as part of our business development process," adds Gough.

"These annual AmCham BFA events are known for their high quality programs and attendees. We look forward to participating and contributing as Canadians to another successful BFA conference," Gough added.

The overall objective of these new web-based tools is to improve the online experience of users through the ability to customize content from the framework to meet their specific needs. Employers will be able to customize job descriptions, build interview guides and carry out competency-based self assessments.  The tools will also provide educators with the ability to compare ICT programs and courses to the ICT Competency Profiles framework and identify learning outcomes to be used for curriculum development and validation.

But first we need your feedback!

Prior to launching these new web-based tools, ICTC will be conducting beta testing dedicated to gathering feedback on the functionality and usability of the final product. We would like to invite you to be one of the first to preview the new ICT Competency Profiles web-based tools. We hope that you will able to participate and provide feedback on your experience using these tools.

ICTC will be carrying out this testing from May 14 – 25. If you are interested in participating, please confirm your participation via e-mail to Alison Aquilina at a.aquilina@ictc-ctic.ca upon which we will be providing you with more information.

    Sincerely,
