What is Hoist?

Hoist is a tech club for teens interested in coding, design or entrepreneurship. If you’re between the ages of 12-19 and have an interest in startups, tech or coding, then come check it out! Don’t forget to bring your laptop and charger. If you do not own a laptop we have a limited number available for use! HOIST is normaly held on the third Saturday of the month (holidays pending).

May Topic: Unity

Come to Hoist Saturday, May 25th to learn about Unity, via a game tutorial on how to create a 2D platforming game (think Super Mario Bros!). Have you always wanted to make a video game, but never knew where to start? Then this is the tutorial for you! We’ll be going over basic game design concepts, level design, etc. as well as more advanced concepts like sprite design, all through the lens of Unity, one of the most popular and easy-to-use game engines of all time!

Presenter: Aristides Milios

Aristides Milios is a highly motivated university student passionate about entrepreneurship, innovation, and technology. From an early age Aristides loved learning how technology works. At the age of 15, Aristides co-founded a startup with a classmate that aimed to create Google Analytics but for retail stores through wireless beacons that detect phone signals. Becoming enmeshed in the local startup community (and Volta, a local startup house) in Halifax, Aristides’s startup Bitness went through the Launch36 and Propel ICT accelerator programs.Through his ties to the Volta community, Aristides and that same classmate jointly co-founded Hoist, a monthly meet for youth interested in technology and entrepreneurship topics.

Since beginning university, Aristides’s passion has not slowed, with his continued involvement in tech and entrepreneurship on the Dalhousie University campus. He has joined the University Innovation Fellows program, organized by Stanford’s d.school of Design, as one of Dalhousie’s two resident Innovation Fellows, and did a research internship at MarineTraffic on the topic of machine language and neural networks in the summer of 2018.

What Happens at Hoist?

Learn from experts in the business. The first half-hour will be a lesson from a pro on the topic of the day – App basics, coding (android/ios?) etc.

Enjoy some pizza with your new friends.

Build or design something, apply what you just learned…it’s a mini hackathon. Work in a group or on your own to create the next big product or service!

Reflect and discuss the day…what did you find challenging or exciting? Chill out and talk to your pals new and old about what you created!

If you’re unable to attend an event please take a minute and cancel your ticket. This allows our events team to better prepare for every event.
